iPhone Duo Is Here: How to Get Your App Ready for Apple's First Foldable
Apple's first foldable changes the shape of the screen your app must fill. Here is what is new and a practical checklist to get ready.
Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, goes on pre-order on 16 October 2026 and reaches customers from 23 October. It changes the shape of the screen your app has to fill, sometimes several times in one session. If you own or manage an iPhone app, here is what is new and a practical checklist to get ready.
What is the iPhone Duo?
Announced on 9 September 2026, the iPhone Duo folds open like a book. According to Apple’s announcement:
- A 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, with the same aspect ratio so content scales between them.
- The A20 Pro chip, the same as iPhone 18 Pro.
- Prices from $1,999 in the US.
- iOS 27.1, with Split View for two apps side by side, two windows of the same app and saved app pairs, a first for iPhone.
- Apple says iOS adapts content as the device folds, rotates or switches displays.
Why it matters for your app
Until now, an iPhone app could assume a narrow, tall screen. On iPhone Duo, the same app may open on the small outer screen, move to a wide tablet-like screen when unfolded, then shrink to half that width when the user puts another app beside it. Apple says developers adapt using new and updated APIs in the latest SDKs. Netflix, Zoom and Slack already support the folding design.
The people who pay $1,999 for a phone are early adopters and heavy users, often exactly the customers most valuable to your business. A stretched or broken layout is the first thing they will notice.
Your iPhone Duo readiness checklist
1. Remove fixed widths and assumptions
Search your code and designs for hard-coded screen sizes, “phone vs tablet” checks and layouts that assume portrait. Layouts should respond to the space available, not the device name.
2. Design a wide layout, not a stretched one
On the inner screen, a single column of content stretched across 7.6 inches looks empty. Plan a two-pane layout where it helps: a list on the left and detail on the right, or a product image beside its description.
3. Keep state when the screen changes
When a user unfolds the phone mid-task, they should land in exactly the same place: same scroll position, same half-written message, same video timestamp. Test unfolding during checkout, form entry and media playback.
4. Support Split View and multiple windows
Your app now needs to work at half the inner screen’s width next to another app. If it makes sense for your product, support two windows of your app at once, such as two documents or two conversations.
5. Check images, video and charts
Assets designed for a phone screen can look soft on a larger display. Check image resolution, video aspect ratios and how charts and tables reflow.
6. Update your SDK and test properly
Build with the latest Xcode and iOS SDK. Apple has said Device Hub support for iPhone Duo in Xcode is on the way, so plan a testing round once it arrives, and on real hardware if you can.
7. Cross-platform apps need checking too
If your app is built with React Native or Flutter, update to the latest framework versions and test the same scenarios. The framework handles some resizing, but your layouts still need to make sense at every width. Our comparison of React Native, Flutter and native explains the trade-offs.
How much work is it?
For apps already built with responsive layouts that support iPad, adapting to iPhone Duo is often a matter of testing and polish. Apps built around fixed phone layouts may need key screens redesigned. The fastest way to find out is a short audit of your five most-used screens on the new sizes.
Should you prioritise it now?
The iPhone Duo is a premium device, so it will be a small share of users at first. But foldables tend to attract influential users, App Store reviewers and the press. If your app is central to your business, make sure your most important journeys, such as sign-up, purchase and core features, work well on day one.

Frequently asked questions
When is the iPhone Duo released?
Pre-orders start on 16 October 2026 and the phone is available from 23 October in more than 70 countries and regions, with 28 more following on 30 October.
Will my existing iPhone app work on the iPhone Duo?
Apple says iOS adapts content as the device folds and unfolds, but apps with fixed layouts may look stretched or awkward on the larger inner screen. Testing is the only way to be sure.
Do I need to build a separate app for the iPhone Duo?
No. The same app adapts to both screens. The work is in making its layouts respond well to each size.
Does the iPhone Duo support split-screen apps?
Yes. iOS 27.1 on iPhone Duo adds Split View, so users can run two apps side by side on the inner display.
