Apple HomeView, Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2: What Apple's New Home Lineup Means for Businesses

On 13 October 2026 Apple announced three new home products: HomeView, a smart-home display; a new Apple TV 4K; and HomePod mini 2. HomeView was one of the most searched tech topics in the US that week. Here is what was announced, and what it means if you build apps or run a business that wants to reach customers at home.

What HomeView actually is

HomeView is a shared screen for the home. It works as a smart-home hub for HomeKit and Matter accessories such as lights, locks, thermostats and cameras, so it does not need a HomePod or Apple TV to run your home. It recognises who is standing in front of it and switches to that person’s calendar, reminders and widgets. It also handles FaceTime, music, recipes with hands-free timers and an intercom.

It comes in a tabletop version and a wall-mounted version, both at $299, with wall mounts sold separately.

Can you build apps for HomeView?

Not directly, at least not yet. Apple has not announced a HomeView App Store. What has been confirmed:

  • HomeView ships with Apple’s own apps, such as Calendar, Reminders, Messages, Music, Home and Safari.
  • Compatible third-party audio and video apps run from a nearby iPhone, rather than being installed on HomeView itself.
  • It supports widgets, Live Activities and Handoff from iPhone.

So the route onto HomeView today runs through your iPhone app. If your iOS app has good widgets and Live Activities, it is ready to show up on the screen in your customers’ kitchens and hallways.

What app makers should do now

  1. Invest in widgets. A widget that shows the one thing a user checks most often, such as an order status, next booking or account balance, is the most likely way into a shared home screen.
  2. Add Live Activities for anything time-based. Deliveries, taxi arrivals, cooking timers, sports scores and appointment countdowns are perfect for a glanceable screen.
  3. Make media apps behave well across devices. If you publish audio or video, test playback handoff from iPhone and how your app behaves when started from another device.
  4. Design for a shared screen. HomeView is used by a whole household. Avoid showing private information in widgets by default, and give users control over what appears.
  5. Watch for developer announcements. Apple often opens new platforms to developers in stages. Keep your iOS app up to date with the latest SDKs so you can move quickly if HomeView apps arrive.

What it means for other businesses

Smart-home product makers: HomeView strengthens the case for Matter support. A device that works with Matter can be controlled from HomeView without extra integration work.

Service businesses: More homes with always-on screens and voice assistants means more people asking quick, spoken questions. Clear, well-structured answers on your website, such as opening hours, prices and service areas, make it easier for assistants to find and repeat the right information.

Media and content brands: The new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2 raise the quality bar for audio and video at home. If streaming or audio is part of your product, the living room is getting more competitive and more valuable.

Should you act now or wait?

For most businesses, the right move is small and cheap: make sure your iPhone app has useful widgets and Live Activities, and keep it on current SDKs. That pays off on iPhone today, whether or not HomeView takes off. Bigger investments can wait until Apple shares more about developer access and real sales figures appear.
